LANDRY & BLUE

LANDRY WALKED WITH A CANE
AND A DOG HE CALLED BLUE
DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TO SAY
HE HAD NO TIME FOR FOOLS
SAID HE MET HIS WIFE
BEFORE HE MOVED TO TERREBONNE
SHE KNEW HE HAD MONEY
AND HE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS

I WAS JUST A CHILD
I MUST HAVE BEEN 13
I WOULD SIT BY THE RIVER BANKS
SINGING TO THE TREES
ALONG THE ATCHAFALAYA RIVER
MOSQUITOES BUZZ LIKE BEES
IT WAS A WONDERFUL CHILDHOOD
IT ENDED SUDDENLY

IT WAS UNDER THE SHADE
OF A SWELTERING SUN
WHEN THE ONLY THING BUSY
WAS THE TRIGGER ON A GUN
ACROSS THE RIVER BED
I HEARD THE LOUDENING WORDS
TWO VOICES WERE RISING
RAISING UP THE DIRT
WHEN THE DUST HAD CLEARED
THERE WAS ONLY ONE ALIVE
I WATCHED MR. LANDRY WALK AWAY
FROM HIS NASTY ABUSIVE WIFE

IT WAS UNDER THE SHADE
OF A SWELTERING AUGUST SUN
WHEN THE ONLY THING BUSY
WAS THE TRIGGER ON A GUN

SERGEANT BRADLY ROSE ASKED ME,
"WHAT DID YOU SEE?"
“YOU’RE THE ONLY ONE THAT THEY’VE
IDENTIFIED AT THE SCENE”
"JUST TELL THE TRUTH
YOU’LL HELP THIS COMMUNITY”
I SAID, “YES, SIR. I NEVER HEARD
NOR SAW A THING”
IT WAS UNDER THE SHADE
OF A SWELTERING SUN
WHEN THE ONLY THING BUSY
WAS THE TRIGGER ON A GUN

IT WAS UNDER THE SHADE
OF A SWELTERING AUGUST SUN
WHEN THE ONLY THING BUSY
WAS THE TRIGGER ON A GUN
